Double Double Bonus video poker is an extremely popular version of Jacks or Better video poker. You can find the game at most online casinos and at many live casinos as well. The best thing about Double Double Bonus is that players can achieve a return greater than 100% if they use the correct strategy and play at full pay machines.
Double Double Bonus Rules
The basic rules of Double Double Bonus are the same as for all other video poker games. You start each game by inserting your player's card or virtual coins in the machine. After that, you select the denomination of coins you want to bet and how many coins you want to bet per deal.
When playing Double Double Bonus video poker, always pick a coin denomination that will allow you to comfortably bet 5 coins every time. The payouts for 5 coins are a lot bigger and that's important to help you gain a 100%+ return.
After you get your money inserted, you hit the "Deal" button to receive your first cards. The video poker machine will give you five cards and you can choose which ones you would like to keep by selecting those cards and pressing the "Hold" button. Once you have selected which cards to keep, the rest will be discarded and new cards will be dealt. If your final hand is a pair of jacks or better, you'll be paid out according to the pay table.
Special Payouts
Double Double Bonus differs from other video poker variations because it offers special payouts for 4 of a Kind hands that come with special kickers. If you get four aces, for example, you'll be paid 800 to 1 on a five coin bet. But if you get four aces with a 2, 3 or 4 as the fifth card, you'll get 2000 to 1 on a five coin bet.
Double Feature
Every time you win a hand, you'll have the option of doubling your bet or keeping the original payout. If you choose to double your bet, you'll be taken to a bonus game where the computer deals one card face up and four cards face down.
The object of the game is to pick a higher card than the one that's showing face up. There's no skill to this game because the other cards are all face down. If you pick a card that's higher, your winnings will be doubled and you'll have the option of doubling again. If you pick a card that's lower, you'll lose the bet.
Pay Table
Different casinos offer different pay tables for Double Double bonus so you can expect to see several variations of this pay table if you play at more than one casino. The best pay tables are 10/6 full pay tables or higher. These are the tables that return 10 coins for a full house and 6 coins for a flush. Lower pay tables do exist but they are less profitable.
Hand: | 1 Coin: | 2 Coins: | 3 Coins: | 4 Coins: | 5 Coins: |
Royal Flush | 250 | 500 | 750 | 1000 | 4000 |
Straight Flush | 50 | 100 | 150 | 200 | 250 |

Four 2-4's w/ A-4 | 160 | 320 | 480 | 640 | 800 |
Four Aces | 160 | 320 | 480 | 640 | 800 |
Four Two's-Four's | 80 | 160 | 240 | 320 | 400 |
Four Five's-King's | 50 | 100 | 150 | 200 | 250 |
Full House | 10 | 20 | 30 | 40 | 50 |
Flush | 6 | 12 | 18 | 24 | 30 |
Straight | 4 | 8 | 12 | 16 | 20 |
Three of a Kind | 3 | 6 | 9 | 12 | 15 |
Two Pair | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
Jacks or Better | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
The above pay table is rarely offered online or live, as most casinos choose to use low pay versions of the pay table that cut payouts to increase the house edge. Learn more about Dbl Dbl Bonus Return Tables.
Double Double Bonus Strategy
Video poker strategy is based on making the best choices for which cards to hold and which cards to discard. Usually the correct choices are pretty obvious, but there are a few instances where the decision isn't as obvious. Here are a few tips that'll help you navigate the murky waters of those less obvious decisions: Read our full Double Double Bonus Strategy guide.
- If you are ever dealt two pairs and one of those pairs is Ace-Ace, discard everything except for the AA. The large payout for multiple aces makes it worth going for the four-of-a-kind hand and, failing that, three of a kind.
- Hold all other two pair hands. If you get two pairs right off the bat and neither one of those pairs are aces, just hold the 2 pairs for the guaranteed payout.
- If you get a full house that includes three aces, you should hold only the aces and discard everything else. This sounds crazy but the large payouts for 4 aces make it the mathematically correct play.
- Do not hold 2s-4s in your hand as potential kickers. For example, if you have 2 aces and a 2 in your hand, you should hold only the aces.
- If you get an ace and two other high cards of mixed suits, you should hold the ace only.
Double Double Bonus Online
The best Double Double Bonus poker game I've been able to find to date is at Bovada Casino. The pay table isn't quite as nice as the one listed above but it's the best you'll find online. The unlimited 10% bonus and top notch software make up for it though, so I have to recommend Bovada Casino as my top pick.
