How to Play Aces and Eights
Aces and Eights is a very simple game to play. You insert your money into the machine, choose a coin denomination (usually $0.05, $0.25, $0.50, $1, or $5), and choose how many coins you would like to bet per hand (between one and five). Then, push the Deal button to start your first hand. Five cards will come up on your screen.
From there, you select which of the five cards you would like to keep, and which you would like to discard in exchange for new ones. Once you have held the cards you would like to keep, click Draw to receive your new cards. If your final hand is a pair of Jacks or better, you will receive a payout (the size of the payout depends on your hand's strength).
Pay Tables
To see how much each hand pays out in an Aces and Eights game, you have to look at the "pay table". Different Aces and Eights machines use different pay tables, and different pay tables will pay out different amounts of money even though they are on the same game. The pay table you want to find is the "full pay" pay table. The "full pay" version pays the most of all the tables, and it is listed below so you can easily recognize it:
Full Pay Aces and Eights
If you want to play Aces and Eights we recommend finding a "full pay" game. Full pay games utilize the best possible pay table, and thus pay out the maximum amount of money. Although full pay games don't put a player at the advantage, they still reduce the house edge drastically. Here is the pay table for full pay Aces and Eights:
Hand: | 1 Coin: | 2 Coins: | 3 Coins: | 4 Coins: | 5 Coins: |
Royal Flush | 250 | 500 | 750 | 1000 | 4000 |
Four of a Kind Aces/Eights | 80 | 160 | 240 | 320 | 400 |
Straight Flush | 50 | 100 | 150 | 200 | 250 |
Four of a Kind Sevens | 50 | 100 | 150 | 200 | 250 |
Four of a Kind (other) | 25 | 50 | 75 | 100 | 125 |
Full House | 8 | 16 | 24 | 32 | 40 |
Flush | 5 | 10 | 15 | 20 | 25 |
Straight | 4 | 8 | 12 | 16 | 20 |
Three of a Kind | 3 | 6 | 9 | 12 | 15 |
Two Pair | 2 | 4 | 6 | 8 | 10 |
Pair (Jacks or better) | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
Full pay Aces and Eights provides a payout percentage of 99.78% (when using perfect strategy). You can usually find full pay Aces and Eights games in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. We recommend practicing at an online casino before making a trip, so you can learn the game and sort out your strategy. Bovada Casino has an excellent Aces and Eights game.
Other Pay Tables
Some casinos choose to use different pay tables, in effect "tightening" up the machine and increasing the house edge. Often times these pay tables will look enticing, as the rare payouts like full houses will be increased, but make sure to check the common payouts like two pair, as often those will be reduced to compensate.
We've evaluated quite a few Aces and Eights pay tables, and calculated the max payout percentages for each one. Learn more at our full listing of Aces and Eights pay tables.
Aces and Eights Strategy
Aces and Eights requires different strategy than normal Jacks or Better because of the increased payouts for quad Aces, Eights, and Sevens. Aces and Eights Strategy is a topic of it's own, but we'll provide a few tips now so you can learn the basics:
- If you have a flush or a straight you should stand pat, even if you have strong draws to a Royal Flush.
- If you have four to a flush or an open ended straight draw you should go for the draw, even if you have a high pair because the payouts are so much bigger.
- If you have just two high cards, you should hold them and hope to pair them instead of drawing five new cards.
- If you have one high card you should hold it and draw four instead of drawing five.
At some point we'll get a full strategy chart published for Aces and Eights, so stay tuned.
